What is the energy certification of buildings?

Energy certification of new buildings is mandatory since 31 October 2007, when it began the period of compulsory application of Royal Decree 47/2007. This DR establishes the basic procedure and the calculation methodology to be followed for obtaining the energy efficiency rating of buildings in Spain.

But what mean energy certification of buildings?

Little by little, we have grown accustomed to seeing energy labels next to the technical characteristics of the appliances in its stores.
These labels give us an idea of \u200b\u200bthe energy efficiency of the appliance to which it belongs, ranking with a letter depending on the level of energy consumption. Such labels can be seen increasingly in products such as lamps, office equipment and cars among others.



And now, after the entry into force of Decree 47/2007, we can see energy labels displayed at the entrances of some new buildings, mainly those to the public. And although so far these regulations only affect new buildings and some renovations of buildings, in the very near future, all buildings must have their corresponding energy label.

Energy certification of buildings, as in the case of appliances and other products affected on these standards, to classify each building in terms of final energy consumption expected of it, associating it with a letter from A to G. In this way, the end user of the building before purchase, provide information on the expected energy performance of the building, and so on also on the level of expected economic costs linked to energy consumption over the lifetime of the building. This information is a new useful criterion for the comparison between the buildings from which the user is interested.

The obligation to implement the energy certification of buildings comes from Europe, one of the requirements laid down in EU Directive 2002/91/EC. This directive came in order to cope with high energy consumption that sector is now the building. In Spain, building accounts for 17% of total final energy consumption, while in Europe the figure is above 40%. This is a considerable consumption requiring action seeking more energy efficient buildings with lower CO2 emissions.
